Opportunity Snapshot

In this unique opportunity you will own the new product pipeline in a relatively new and highly entrepreneurial Medical Applications business unit within a global manufacturing leader. You'll help us discover new markets, technologies and applications as we grow this business and your impact will be significant: our ongoing success will depend on developing and commercializing the next generation of products in this competitive marketplace. Medical Applications has strong commitment from corporate and we're gaining traction, building on early successes. Your success here could open up promotional opportunities across Sealed Air.

You will partner with the business team to develop and implement the strategy to drive our R&D pipeline, including technical road mapping, innovation management, and customer interaction (this is not a pure R&D role). To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant experience developing products for the medical and/or pharmaceutical markets and demonstrated success with innovation management; experience with film technologies is strongly preferred. We're looking for a professional with solid interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and influence, negotiate and motivate in a matrix organization. You also will need a proven ability to assess and leverage external technologies.

Sealed Air is a leading global manufacturer of materials and systems for protective, presentation and fresh food packaging, and performance solutions in the industrial, food and consumer markets. Our major brands include Bubble Wrap, Cryovac, Instapak, and Jiffy Mailer. Sealed Air's Medical Applications business delivers turnkey medical packaging solutions that provide superior protection and reliability.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • Minimally, a bachelor's degree and ideally an advanced degree in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline.
  • A technical background in medical packaging solutions or a related field.
  • Proven people and project management skills with a track record of successfully executing against multiple critical priorities.
  • The ability to provide strategic technical thought leadership.
  • Strong business acumen and experience in liaison roles with sales/marketing, production, vendors and external customers.
  • The ability to make difficult decisions in ambiguous situations, establish clear priority and focus, and provide actionable feedback up and down the chain of command.
  • The ability to work globally and experience with remote or dispersed teams.
Other experience preferred, but not required, includes:
  • Experience with thermoforming, foam and/or other packaging technologies.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions.

What's in It for You

High impact -- you will leverage your experience and expertise to take our pipeline management process to the next level, including ensuring best practices in innovation management. We'll also look to you to explore the landscape beyond Sealed Air, seeking new technologies and establishing external partnerships with customers, universities, and government agencies.

Career development -- your performance in this role could set you up to pursue a number of career paths within our organization, including other Sealed Air business units. We take a proactive approach to succession planning and the right person could become CTO.

The best of both worlds -- the entrepreneurial energy in Medical Applications is high, the creativity is flowing, and the pace is fast. At the same time, you'll also enjoy the stability and resources of a global manufacturing leader. In fact, you'll be able to leverage significant resources and technologies in our other business units.

Innovation at the core -- innovation is standard operating procedure in our culture and we've set the bar high. Our worldwide network of packaging design and development laboratories provides solutions to meet real world challenges, and we've earned numerous industry awards and accolades. A few recent examples:
  • 2009 Highest Achievement Award Winner in Packaging Excellence & Gold Award Winner in Packaging Excellence from the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA).
  • 2008 3M Sustainable Packaging Award for the top sustainable innovation from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP).
  • 2008 Silver Award for Technical Innovation from FPA.
  • 2007, 2008, 2009 multiple AmeriStar Awards from IOPP.
  • And more.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer comprehensive benefits.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

You will report to the Global Vice President of Technology and Innovation and partner closely with the Vice President and General Manager, Medical Applications. There is a Technical Leader at each of our six business units and they share ideas and insights. Most of this role calls for independent contributions -- driving the strategic innovation process -- but you will have direct line accountability for a small team of Product Support Specialists who provide customer and product line support, and dotted line relationships with individuals in the larger R&D organization who focus on medical applications.

While Medical Applications is a smaller portfolio within Sealed Air, it is complex and global, and currently includes four distinct businesses:
  • Films and components for pharmaceutical solutions.
  • Films for ostomy products.
  • Medical devices packaging films.
  • Custom-designed blisters and medical trays.
You'll join just in time to play a key role in finalizing our strategy to enter new markets and bring an even more proactive approach to growing the pipeline. Your key objectives will include (this list is not exhaustive but intended to give you a high level view of the position):
  • Establishing a business innovation portfolio, including implementing portfolio tools in collaboration with business leaders in Medical Applications and the other Technical Leaders.
  • Commercializing new products.
  • Building out our business technology roadmap and intellectual property strategy.
  • Creating innovation resource plans and deliverables.
  • Establishing budget allocations based on robust value propositions for all critical programs.
  • Partnering with Sales and Product Management to understand the market and customer needs, and then leading the translation of those needs into technical requirements.
  • Adapting and applying existing Sealed Air technologies to the medical/pharma market to increase speed to market.
  • And more.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will combine the ability to achieve goals independently with the interpersonal skills to drive collaboration in a matrix environment. You'll pay robust attention to the details without getting caught up in paralysis by analysis; often you'll need to make significant and time-sensitive decisions in the absence of complete information. In addition, you will take a proactive approach to ensuring strong lines of communication among all the stakeholders, ensuring expectations and priorities are clear.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
